| APGEN RETURN ON INVESTMENTThis page shows ROI calculations for Web sites that use APGen to
increase user capacity. The cost of scaling a site
by 3 times using APGen is compared to the cost of scaling a site by 3 times using
more Web servers, database servers, rack space, and power. Using APGen increases a Web site's user capacity, and also results in a number of additional benefits.
Additional benefits that can increase your bottom line include: better user experience,
better fault tolerance, easier maintenance,
higher cache utilization, and increased search engine traffic. Savings or increased revenue
from these additional benefits are not included in these ROI calculations. The reason
being that the return on these benefits varies so much for different Web sites. When calculating the ROI for
APGen for your Web site, make sure you include expected returns from all relevant benefits,
not just increased capacity. A 3 times (3x) improvement in Web site capacity is below average for our customers. Most sites
can expect 5x to 20x capacity gains from using APGen. All figures here are for Web applications running on Windows 2000 and using SQL Server 2000.
While the sites shown here are fictional, the figures and prices are based on experience, customer
feedback, and industry research. | Shared Web Server - Hosted Web Site | | Description: | This Web site started as a moderately low traffic dynamic Web site. Initial traffic
was below one thousand visitors per day, so the site was hosted on a shared server. The shared server runs
Windows 2000 and hosts 20 Web sites. A shared SQL server is also used. As the site gains
in popularity, the site is becoming overloaded and is at times unacceptably slow. | | Standard Cost of Scaling: | The standard approach to scale Web sites for higher capacity is to add more hardware. In this
case, the site can be moved to a dedicated dual-proc Web server to increase capacity. The shared
SQL server is not upgraded because the
database server is not yet deemed a bottleneck.
| New dual-proc Web Server | $8,000.00 | Additional Hosting
(monthly) | $1,200.00 | | First Year Total | $22,400.00 | | Second Year Total | $14,400.00 |
| | Cost of Scaling with APGen: | The alternative to scale with hardware is to increase capacity by using APGen. This involves
optimizing high traffic and slow pages using APGen Optimization
Techniques. The existing shared server can continue to be used, so there are no additional cost
relating to a dedicated server and dedicated server hosting.
Developer Costs for Optimization
(1.5 developer weeks) | $6,000.00 | | APGen 2.0 Server License | $999.00 | | 2 APGen 2.0 Dev Licenses | $0.00 | | 2 ASPCache Licenses | $258.00 | | First Year Total | $7,257.00 | | Second Year Total | $0.00 |
| | Two Year Savings: | $29,543.00 |
| Dedicated Single Web Server - Co-located Web Site | | Description: | This Web site started as a moderate traffic dynamic Web site, hosted on a dedicated
Web server. To save money, the database was run on the Web server. However, the latest marketing
blitz has increased traffic and the site is slowing to unacceptable levels. | | Standard Cost of Scaling: | To scale this Web site 3x, the standard approach is to add a separate DB server, and use 2
Web servers. The original Web server could be converted to one Web server in a two server
Web farm. In addition to hardware and rack space, this solution carries additional dev overhead
and management overhead.
| New dual-proc SQL Server and Web Server | $16,000.00 | | Co-lo setup | $1,900.00 | Additional Rack Space and Power
(monthly) | $800.00 | Additional Dev and Test Work
(annual) | $40,000.00 | Additional IT - Web Farm Management
(annual) | $10,000.00 | | First Year Total | $77,500.00 | | Second Year Total | $59,600.00 |
| | Cost of Scaling with APGen: | The alternative to adding two new servers, plus rack space and Web farm testing and management,
is to make the site more efficient with APGen. Once again, APGen Optimization
Techniques are used. The existing dedicated server can continue to be used, and database load is
drastically decreased so the server's Web and database workloads won't interfere with each other.
Developer Costs for Optimization
(3 developer weeks) | $12,000.00 | | 3 APGen 2.0 Server Licenses | $2,195.00 | | 4 APGen 2.0 Dev Licenses | $0.00 | | 5 ASPCache Licenses | $425.00 | 2 WebGecko Priority Support Subscriptions
(annual) | $998.00 | | First Year Total | $15,618.00 | | Second Year Total | $998.00 |
| | Two Year Savings: | $120,484.00 |
| Small Web Farm - Co-located Web Site | | Description: |
This Web site started as a moderate traffic dynamic Web site, hosted on a Web farm consisting of 2 Web servers,
plus a dedicated SQL server. The site has become increasingly popular, and additional capacity is
needed to keep customers happy and prevent bad publicity. | | Standard Cost of Scaling: | To scale this site by 3x would require purchasing 4 more Web servers and a larger database
server. In addition, more rack space is needed, and there will be more work to manage the
larger Web farm.
| New quad-proc SQL Server | $57,000.00 | | 4 more dual-proc Web Servers | $34,800.00 | | Co-lo setup costs | $2,500.00 | Additional co-lo costs
(monthly) | $2,800.00 | Additional IT - Web Farm Management
(annual) | $40,000.00 | | First Year Total | $167,900.00 | | Second Year Total | $73,600.00 |
| | Cost of Scaling with APGen: | Optimization with APGen is once again the alternative to adding hardware.
The existing Web farm can continue to be used as is. WebGecko Consulting Services
are used to help with the initial design and to help company developers get up to speed.

| Large Web Farm - Co-located Web Site | | Description: |
This Web site started as a relatively high traffic dynamic Web site, hosted on a Web farm consisting of 10 Web servers,
plus a single 8-proc dedicated SQL server. The site has become a major player, and additional capacity is
needed to keep customers happy and prevent bad publicity. | | Standard Cost of Scaling: | To scale this site by 3x would require purchasing 22 more Web servers and a larger clustered database
server. In addition, more rack space and bandwidth are needed, plus setup and maintenance costs for
the larger Web farm and clustered DB server.
| 2 new 16-proc SQL Servers, clustered | $1,100,000.00 | | 24 more quad-proc Web Servers | $888,000.00 | | Additional co-lo and bandwidth setup | $8,200.00 | Additional co-lo, power, and bandwidth costs
(monthly) | $15,000.00 | Additional IT - Web Farm Management
(annual) | $120,000.00 | | First Year Total | $2,296,200.00 | | Second Year Total | $300,000.00 |
| | Cost of Scaling with APGen: | Optimization with APGen is once again the alternative to adding hardware.
The existing Web farm can continue to be used as is. WebGecko Consulting Services
